โšก TL;DR โ€” quick answers
Is Wan 3.0 actually released?
Yes, as a public beta. Alibaba Cloud's announcement blog is dated August 7, 2026, and the official Wan account confirmed the beta on X the same week. The headline spec is 30-second single-pass generation with document, spreadsheet, slide and webpage inputs. What doesn't exist yet: indexed API documentation on Alibaba Cloud's international Model Studio, published pricing, or downloadable weights.
Is Wan 3.0 open source?
No, and neither were Wan 2.5, 2.6 or 2.7. We checked the Wan-AI Hugging Face organization and the Wan-Video GitHub directly on August 10, 2026: the newest downloadable weights are still the Wan 2.2 family. Any page calling Wan 2.6 or 3.0 'open-source and free' is describing a model that has never had a weights release.
How long can Wan 3.0 videos be?
Up to 30 seconds in a single generation, per Alibaba's own launch messaging โ€” twice the 15-second ceiling of Wan 2.6 and 2.7. That single-take length is the real story: continuous camera moves without stitching. Resolution is where accounts diverge โ€” SEO pages say 1080p, one YouTube review claims 4K, and Alibaba's announcement names neither. Treat resolution as unconfirmed.

Search "wan 3.0 release date" in early August and you got a wall of confidence: verified-spec tables, pricing pages, "[Tested]" guides โ€” most of it published weeks before Alibaba had said a single word. Then on August 7 Alibaba actually announced Wan 3.0, and the guessing sites retroactively became "right." Sort of.

We ran this same audit on FLUX 3 two weeks ago, and this one is stranger: the model is real, the beta is real, and half the pages ranking for it still describe a product that doesn't exist. Here's the ledger โ€” what traces to Alibaba's own blogs, docs, and accounts, and what was invented to catch your search.

The confirmed baseline: Wan 2.6 and 2.7

Before auditing 3.0, pin down what's actually shipped, because the SEO cluster blurs all three versions into one.

Wan 2.6 launched December 16, 2025, per Alibaba Cloud's own announcement: clips up to 15 seconds, multi-shot storytelling with visual consistency across cuts, synchronized audio, and the headline R2V mode โ€” upload a short reference video of a person and Wan carries their face, movement and voice into new scenes. Partner platforms list it at 1080p/24fps with 2โ€“30-second reference clips; Alibaba's blog, notably, states neither figure.

Wan 2.7 is the release almost nobody noticed. Alibaba Cloud announced Wan2.7-Video on April 7, 2026 โ€” four models (T2V, I2V, R2V, and instruction-based video editing), 720p/1080p output, 2โ€“15 seconds, with dialogue editing that re-syncs lips while preserving the original voice. A separate Wan2.7-Image line added deep character personalization and 3,000-token prompts. All of it API-only: Model Studio, wan.video, and the Qwen app.

Neither release put weights on Hugging Face. That's the detail the aggregators bury, and it's why our local Wan 2.2 setup on the RTX 4080 is still running a July 2025 architecture: it remains the newest Wan you can actually download.

Wan 3.0: real as of August 7

The official confirmation, from the official account:

Alibaba Cloud's companion blog โ€” "Alibaba Unveils Wan3.0 with Twice as Long Video Outputs from a Richer Variety of Inputs," dated August 7, 2026 โ€” and Alibaba Group's own X post pin down the confirmed spec sheet: 30-second video in a single generation pass, and a widened input system that accepts documents, spreadsheets, slide decks and webpages alongside text, image, audio and video. The pitch is turning a quarterly deck into an explainer without a storyboard pass, and the marketing phrase of the launch is "reality-grade" rendering.

Early beta footage is already circulating, and it's worth watching before you absorb anyone's spec table:

โ–ถ Wan 3.0 Review // Seedance Killer is here?

Now the unconfirmed column. That review's title card says 4K. The SEO cluster says 1080p. Alibaba's announcement says neither โ€” and we've been burned before by exactly this gap, when the internet's "Seedance 4K" setting turned out not to exist at launch. Resolution goes in the wait-and-verify pile. Same for pricing: as of August 2026 the per-second rates floating around ($0.05โ€“$0.20/s by resolution tier) appear only on third-party aggregators, none tracing to a Model Studio pricing page we could load. And Alibaba Cloud's international documentation center returned zero wan3.0 API references when we searched it on August 10 โ€” the beta is real, but developer access is clearly still rolling out.

What the SEO cluster invented

Scoring the pages that were ranking before the announcement. Wavespeed's March "Wan 2.7 Is Coming" post gets partial credit โ€” 2.7 did come, roughly on schedule. From there it degrades. A dedicated wan27.org site claims Wan 2.7 went live April 22; Alibaba's blog is dated April 7. An invideo guide credits 2.7 with a "Thinking Mode" that appears nowhere in the official announcement. Multiple pages published "verified" Wan 3.0 specs, APIs and pricing in June and July โ€” before Alibaba had confirmed the model existed. And the boldest fiction is the recurring "open-source, fast, and free" framing: one review site literally titles Wan 2.6 "Alibaba's Open-Source Video AI" and claims its weights are on Hugging Face. They are not. We looked.

The open-weights reality check

Here's what the official orgs were doing while the content farms wrote fan fiction. Checked directly on August 10: the Wan-AI Hugging Face organization hosts 27 models, and the newest downloadable one is Wan2.2-Animate-2-14B โ€” updated within the last day. The Wan-Video GitHub matches: a fresh Wan-Animate-2 repo updated August 8, plus Wan-Dancer, the genuinely open music-to-dance model from July that generates minutes of coherent motion.

So the honest picture is a fork: the flagship line (2.6 โ†’ 2.7 โ†’ 3.0) went API-only, while the open ecosystem keeps getting real drops on the 2.2 backbone โ€” which is why our Wan 2.2 Animate guide got a new sibling model this week while "Wan 3.0 open source" remains a fantasy query. If open weights are the reason you're here, the open-weight model landscape is the page to bookmark, and for API-model shootouts our MiniMax H3 vs Wan 2.2 comparison shows how we test when we can actually render frames.

This audit is the fact-checking hub of our full Wan 3.0 coverage. Once you know what's real, the rest of the cluster takes it from there: the complete Wan 3.0 guide covers everything the beta can do today, Wan 3.0 vs Wan 2.7 audits the generation-over-generation upgrade, Wan 3.0 vs Seedance 2.5 settles the "Seedance killer" question, and how to access Wan 3.0 walks every real route into the beta โ€” and flags the fake ones.

How we verified: we didn't trust any ranking page for this one โ€” every confirmed row traces to Alibaba Cloud's announcement blogs, its Model Studio documentation index, the official Alibaba and Wan X accounts, or the Wan-AI Hugging Face and Wan-Video GitHub orgs, all loaded directly this week. Rows marked partner-listed come from hosting platforms' model pages, not Alibaba. Beta generation access is gated, so nothing here is our own render test yet.

My honest read: Wan 3.0's 30-second single take is the most interesting confirmed spec of the launch โ€” that's one-take shot language no stitching pipeline gives you cleanly. But until API docs, pricing, and a resolution number exist on an Alibaba page, everything else is projection. The moment we get beta access we'll run our standard prompt set and report what the "reality-grade" claim actually survives โ€” and if history repeats, the first casualty will be someone's imaginary 4K toggle.

โ–ธWhat happened to Wan 2.7?

It shipped quietly as an API-only release. Alibaba Cloud announced Wan2.7-Video on April 7, 2026 โ€” text-to-video, image-to-video, reference-to-video and instruction-based video editing at 720p/1080p, 2โ€“15 seconds โ€” alongside a separate Wan2.7-Image line. It's live on Model Studio, wan.video and the Qwen app. No weights were released, which is why local runners never saw it.
