โก TL;DR โ quick answers
- Is Wan 3.0 better than Seedance 2.5?
- Nobody can honestly answer that yet. Wan 3.0 is a days-old public beta with a 30-second headline claim and mostly unpublished specs โ resolution, pricing and API access are all unconfirmed. Seedance 2.5 is a shipped, testable product: 4-30 second clips at 480p/720p with up to 50 reference inputs. For production work today, Seedance 2.5 is the only one of the two you can actually build on.
- Is Wan 3.0 open source like Wan 2.2?
- No. As of August 10, 2026 there are no Wan 3.0 weights on Hugging Face or GitHub โ the newest open release in the Wan family is Wan2.2-Animate-2-14B. Wan 2.5, 2.6, 2.7 and 3.0 are all API/platform-only. If you want open weights, the Wan 2.2 line is still the answer.
- What resolution does Wan 3.0 generate?
- Unconfirmed. Alibaba's beta announcement leads with 30-second clips and document-to-video inputs, not a resolution spec. Third-party sites claiming 'native 4K' for Wan 3.0 are not citing an official source โ and the same claim was made for Seedance 2.5 before it shipped at 720p max, so treat it with suspicion until Alibaba publishes numbers.

The "Seedance killer" framing arrived within about 48 hours of Wan 3.0's beta announcement, mostly from YouTube thumbnails. We've shipped real productions on Seedance 2.5 โ and we spent this week digging through what Alibaba has actually confirmed about Wan 3.0 versus what the SEO content farms invented. This comparison is the honest version: one shipped model we know intimately, against one beta with a genuinely exciting headline claim and a lot of blank spaces.
The 30-second verdict
- Seedance 2.5 is the model you can use today: 4โ30 second clips, 480p/720p, up to 50 reference inputs, omni-reference consistency, video editing and extension. Every spec in this post's Seedance column is either from ByteDance's shipped product or our own renders.
- Wan 3.0 is a public beta (announced August 7, 2026) with one confirmed headline โ clips up to 30 seconds โ plus a genuinely novel input trick: it accepts documents (PDF, PPT, spreadsheets, web pages) as creative references. Resolution, pricing, API access and audio specs are all unpublished.
If you're choosing a tool for a project this month, that asymmetry is the verdict. But the matchup is worth taking seriously, because the Wan line's trajectory โ 2.6 in December, 2.7 in April, 3.0 in August โ is the fastest release cadence in AI video right now.
By the numbers
Every figure below traces to a source we checked this session โ Alibaba's own channels, ByteDance partner documentation, or the official Wan repos:
- August 7, 2026 โ Wan 3.0 public beta announced via Alibaba's official blog and the @Alibaba_Wan account (some coverage dates it August 6; the formal launch event followed in Hangzhou)
- 30 seconds โ Wan 3.0's claimed single-pass clip length; Seedance 2.5's confirmed range is 4โ30 seconds per request
- 480p / 720p โ Seedance 2.5's only shipped resolutions, despite pre-launch 4K marketing; Wan 3.0's resolution is unpublished
- 50 โ Seedance 2.5's maximum reference inputs per generation: 30 images, 10 video clips, 10 audio
- April 7, 2026 / December 16, 2025 โ Wan 2.7 and Wan 2.6 release dates per Alibaba Cloud's official blog; Wan 2.6 shipped 1080p output at 24fps with synchronized audio
- Zero โ open-weight releases for Wan 2.5, 2.6, 2.7 or 3.0 on huggingface.co/Wan-AI or github.com/Wan-Video as of August 10, 2026; the newest open checkpoint is Wan2.2-Animate-2-14B
Pricing for both models is unpublished as of August 2026 โ more on that below.
Spec sheet: confirmed vs unconfirmed
| Spec | Seedance 2.5 (shipped) | Wan 3.0 (beta) |
|---|---|---|
| Clip length | 4โ30s, confirmed | Up to 30s, claimed in beta announcement |
| Resolution | 480p / 720p only | Unpublished |
| Frame rate | 24fps | Unpublished |
| Native audio | No (audio as reference input only) | Unpublished (Wan 2.6 had sync audio) |
| References | Up to 50 (30 img / 10 video / 10 audio) | Text, image + documents/web pages |
| Modes | T2V, omni-reference, video edit, video extension | Beta web app; full API not open |
| Open weights | No (ByteDance never open-sources Seedance) | No โ Wan 2.2 line remains the open branch |
| Pricing | Platform credits; per-second rate unpublished | Beta; unpublished |
That right-hand column is uncomfortable for anyone who has already declared a winner. The internet filled those blanks with confident numbers anyway โ we found "native 4K," an "AI Director," "Identity Lock" and "multi-track stereo audio" attributed to Wan 3.0 across a cluster of lookalike SEO domains, none citing an Alibaba source. We catalogue the whole mess, claim by claim, in Wan 3.0: what's actually confirmed. The short version: if a spec isn't in Alibaba's announcement, treat it as fiction until the Hangzhou launch materials or API docs say otherwise.
The announcement itself is worth reading in the original.
What Wan 3.0 actually brings
Two things in the beta are genuinely new, and neither is "Seedance but better."
One-take grammar. Thirty seconds in a single pass isn't just a bigger number โ it changes what shot language is possible. Continuous camera moves, slow reveals, one-take walk-and-talks: everything that dies when you have to stitch 10-second clips. Seedance 2.5 technically matches the 30-second ceiling, and in our production use those long passes are its most underrated feature โ but Wan making it the headline tells you where Alibaba is aiming.
Document-to-video. Wan 3.0 accepts PDFs, slide decks, spreadsheets and web pages as creative references. Nobody else in this class does that. For explainer content, corporate video and data storytelling, that's a different product category, not a spec bump. It's also a hint that Alibaba is chasing business video, not the creator-cinema lane where Seedance lives.
What Wan 3.0 has not demonstrated yet is the thing Seedance 2.5 is actually best at โ which brings us to the half of this comparison we can speak to first-hand.
Note the pattern in that early coverage: the excitement is real, but nearly every "spec" cited traces back to the same unofficial sites. Watch the demo footage; ignore the numbers.
Where Seedance 2.5 wins today: the reference workflow
We run serialized character content through Seedance 2.5 weekly, and the 50-reference omni system is the reason. Character sheets, wardrobe references, location plates, prop shots and audio references all attach to a single generation โ and in our testing, a properly built reference library holds a character's identity across dozens of shots with zero re-training. Our Seedance 2.5 complete guide documents the exact reference-set structure we use.
Two production realities worth knowing that the spec sheets don't mention:
- No start/end frame conditioning. Unlike Seedance 2.0, version 2.5 dropped keyframe pinning. If your workflow depends on first-frame/last-frame control, you're stitching 2.0 into the pipeline โ a genuine regression we've had to design around.
- The 4K that never shipped. Seedance 2.5 was marketed pre-launch with native 4K. It shipped at 720p max. We upscale in post. This matters for the Wan comparison because it's the strongest evidence for skepticism about any unshipped resolution claim in this space โ we wrote up the full discrepancy in Seedance 2.5 specs: what's confirmed.
On motion quality, the fairest public preview of this rivalry is the previous generation fighting it out โ Wan 2.7 versus Seedance 2.0 was already close:
Our read of that generation: Wan 2.7 had caught up on raw image quality and camera control, while Seedance held the edge on reference-driven consistency and edit workflows. Wan 3.0 needs to close the workflow gap, not the quality gap โ and nothing in the beta announcement addresses references at Seedance's scale.
Audio, access and price
Audio. Seedance 2.5 generates no synchronized dialogue โ audio is a reference input and a post step. Wan 2.6 shipped synchronized audio back in December 2025 (per Alibaba Cloud's official release blog), so native audio in Wan 3.0 is plausible โ but unconfirmed for the beta. If in-clip speech is your hard requirement today, neither model is your answer; see Seedance 2.5 vs Veo 3.1.
Access. Seedance 2.5 is live on partner platforms โ Higgsfield is where we run it, with text-to-video, omni-reference, video edit and extension modes; our access guide covers every current path. Wan 3.0 is a web beta on Alibaba's platform with no fully open API yet. And critically for the local-render crowd: neither model runs on your GPU. The open-weight Wan branch stopped at 2.2 โ still excellent, still what we recommend in our Wan 2.2 local setup guide โ and the newest open drop is Wan2.2-Animate-2-14B, not anything from the 3.0 line.
Price. As of August 2026: Wan 3.0's beta is free-leaning with no published rate card; Seedance 2.5 bills in platform credits with no official per-second price from ByteDance. On our budget, a 30-second Seedance pass costs enough that we storyboard before we render โ our AI video cost breakdown has the current math. Probe with a short clip before committing a project budget to either.
Verdict matrix by use case
| Use case | Pick today | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Serialized character content | Seedance 2.5 | 50-ref omni consistency is unmatched and shipped |
| One-take cinematic shots | Seedance 2.5 (Wan 3.0 worth testing) | Both claim 30s; only one is verifiable |
| Explainers from docs/decks | Wan 3.0 beta | Document-to-video exists nowhere else |
| Client work with revisions | Seedance 2.5 | Video edit + extension modes; known failure modes |
| Local / open-weight pipeline | Neither โ Wan 2.2 | Only open branch in either family |
| Native dialogue | Neither | See Veo comparisons |
| Betting on the next 6 months | Watch Wan | Fastest release cadence in the field |
What we still don't know
Honesty section: Wan 3.0's resolution, frame rate, audio spec, API pricing, reference-input limits and commercial terms are all unpublished as of August 10, 2026. We have not yet run our standard consistency gauntlet on the Wan 3.0 beta, so every Wan quality judgement here is provisional. And Seedance 2.5's per-second pricing remains officially unpublished eight-plus weeks after launch, which is its own kind of red flag. When the Hangzhou launch materials land, our Wan 3.0 complete guide is where we'll update first.
Methodology
The Seedance half of this comparison comes from weekly production use on Higgsfield since launch โ reference-library builds, long-take passes, edit-mode revisions, and the 2.0-vs-2.5 regressions we hit ourselves. The Wan half is restricted to Alibaba's official channels (the @Alibaba_Wan announcement, Alibaba Cloud release blogs) and the official Wan-AI Hugging Face and Wan-Video GitHub repos, checked August 10, 2026. We deliberately excluded the lookalike SEO domains publishing invented Wan 3.0 specs โ if we couldn't trace a number to Alibaba or ByteDance, it either got hedged or cut.
Verdict: Seedance 2.5 for anything you're shipping this quarter. Wan 3.0 for a free beta test-drive and a close watch on the Hangzhou announcements โ because if Alibaba confirms even half of what the hype machine has already promised on its behalf, this becomes the closest matchup in AI video.
Frequently asked questions
โธIs Wan 3.0 better than Seedance 2.5?
Nobody can honestly answer that yet. โธIs Wan 3.0 open source like Wan 2.2?
No.
โธWhat resolution does Wan 3.0 generate?
Unconfirmed.
โธDoes Seedance 2.5 have native audio?
No synchronized dialogue generation โ Seedance 2.5 accepts audio as reference input (up to 10 audio references among its 50 total), but sound design and voiceover are a post step. Wan 2.6 shipped synchronized audio in December 2025, so audio is a plausible Wan 3.0 strength โ but for 3.0 specifically it remains unconfirmed.
โธWhich is cheaper, Wan 3.0 or Seedance 2.5?
As of August 2026 neither vendor has published headline per-second pricing for these versions. Wan 3.0 is in free-leaning public beta on Alibaba's platform; Seedance 2.5 is billed in platform credits on hosts like Higgsfield, where cost scales with duration. Probe a short generation before budgeting a project on either.
