Our verdict from production
Udio treats a song as something you build. Generation happens in segments that you extend forward and backward, and its editing features let you change one section while preserving the rest — the closest AI music gets to a DAW mindset. In our same-brief testing it frequently wins on instrumental subtlety (jazz phrasing, soul textures) while Suno wins one-shot song coherence.
Pick it when you have a producer's patience and opinions; pick Suno when you need ten finished candidates before lunch. Plenty of serious creators run both: Suno to find the song, Udio to perfect it.
The licensing picture changed — a lot
When we first wrote this hub, "verify current terms" was the honest answer on commercial rights. It isn't the whole story anymore. Udio settled its copyright suit with Universal Music Group in October 2025 and turned it into a licensing deal, then added Warner Music Group in November 2025, the Merlin Network (independent labels and distributors) in January 2026, and Kobalt Music Group in April 2026 — four majors and aggregators in six months. Sony Music is the one holdout still litigating its piece of the original RIAA-led suit.
The catch is what those deals bought: a "walled garden," not a return to free-for-all generation. Post-settlement, Udio leans more toward an interactive remix experience — prompt, listen, iterate inside the app — with exporting a finished file gated behind label-approved flows for opted-in catalogs, and participating artists and songwriters credited and paid. That's a genuinely different trust proposition than Suno's ongoing litigation with Sony and UMG, and worth factoring in if licensing risk is part of your tool choice.
