๐Ÿšช How to Access Veo: 4 Real Doors and the Free Tier

Google ships Veo through four separate surfaces, each with a different free allowance and a different set of lockouts. Here is what each door really costs.

โšก TL;DR โ€” quick answers
Is Veo free?
Partly. Google Flow gives non-subscribers 50 AI credits per day at no cost, usable only on Veo 3.1 Lite, Fast and Quality. They do not roll over, and the daily refresh is triggered by your first generation rather than by midnight. The Gemini app path is no longer free: video generation there needs a Google AI Plus, Pro or Ultra plan and an 18-plus account.
Why can't I generate video in the Gemini app?
Three gates block people, and they stack. Video generation in Gemini Apps is not available to users under 18. On a personal account you need a paid Google AI plan; free accounts are excluded. And uploading video for edits is not available in the EEA, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and some US states, so European users can hit a wall even with an active subscription.
Which Google plan should I buy for Veo work?
Check the Flow allowance, not the marketing tier name. Google AI Plus gets 200 credits a month, AI Pro gets 1,000, the $100 Ultra tier gets 10,000, and the $200 Ultra tier gets 25,000. Free users get 50 a day, which over a full month of daily use out-counts AI Plus on raw volume. Buy Plus for the plan features, not for Flow throughput.
A dim editing suite lit by four glowing doorways, each leading to a different Google interface rendering the same video frame.

Key takeaways

  1. There is no Veo subscription; you are buying into a Google plan that happens to include Veo on one or more surfaces.
  2. Google Flow is the only genuinely free door: 50 credits a day for non-subscribers, no rollover, restricted to Veo 3.1 Lite, Fast and Quality.
  3. The Gemini app route is now Gemini Omni, paid-plan only and 18-plus, which makes most 'Veo is free' guides wrong on their headline claim.
  4. Every output carries an embedded SynthID watermark, so treat disclosure as a delivery requirement rather than a choice.

Fifty credits, gone by 9:20am. That is the entire daily free allowance on Google Flow for a non-subscriber, and I spent mine on Veo 3.1 Fast generations chasing a single eyeline the model kept missing. Three attempts, no usable take, and the counter sat at zero until the next day.

Verdict first: you cannot subscribe to Veo. There is no Veo checkout page and no Veo app to install. Google builds the model, then puts it inside four separate products, and each product carries its own allowance and its own list of people it refuses to serve. Almost every page ranking for "veo free" answers as if one yes-or-no covered all four. It doesn't. Several of those pages are also describing a Gemini app behaviour Google has already replaced.

By the numbers

Four number cards reading 50 free Flow credits a day, minimum age 18 in Gemini Apps, a 5-hour limit refresh, and $0.10 per second of output
The free tier is real but thin, and every other door is gated by age, plan or a per-second meter.
  • 50 free Google Flow credits per day for anyone without a paid Google AI plan; unused credits do not roll over
  • 200 / 1,000 / 10,000 / 25,000 monthly Flow credits on Google AI Plus, AI Pro, the $100 Ultra tier and the $200 Ultra tier
  • 18 minimum age for video generation in Gemini Apps, with no free-account path on a personal login
  • 5 hours between refreshes of Gemini app compute limits, running against a weekly cap
  • $0.10 per second of video output, the published rate for Gemini Omni Flash and the same rate as Veo 3.1 Fast

First, check you want Google's Veo at all

Six numbered steps from ruling out lookalike Veo companies, through Flow's free credits and the three gates, to per-second pricing and SynthID
Work the doors in this order and you rarely pay before you know whether Veo suits the shot.

Three unrelated companies answer to that name in search. Google's Veo is the video generation model this post covers. Veo at veo.co sells sports recording cameras to football clubs. Veo Micromobility at veoride.com runs shared scooters and e-bikes in US cities. If you typed "veo app" hoping to install something, the scooter company is the one with a consumer app on the stores; Google's model has no standalone app under that name, and the consumer route runs through Gemini instead.

So what: if a page you landed on talks about "pairing your Veo" or "renting a ride", you are on the wrong product entirely.

Door 1: Google Flow, the only actually free path

Table of four rows for Google Flow, the Gemini app, Google Vids and the Gemini API, with columns for cost to start and blocking gate
Only Flow lets you start without paying, and only the API removes the daily ceiling.

Flow lives at labs.google and is the surface where the free tier still exists. Google's own help page states that users without a Plus, Pro or Ultra plan receive 50 Flow credits per day at no charge, that unused credits do not roll over, and that those free credits work only for Veo 3.1 Lite, Fast and Quality generations.

The refresh mechanic is the part everyone gets wrong. It is not a midnight reset. Google describes the daily refresh as triggered by your first generation: use your credits on August 12 and the next 50 arrive on August 13. In practice that means your personal clock is set by whenever you first hit generate, not by a shared calendar rollover. I could not verify how that behaves for accounts that skip several days in a row, and Google's page does not spell that case out.

Fifty credits is thin for anything with continuity requirements. A single re-roll cycle eats a meaningful chunk of it, which is why I plan free-tier sessions around one locked shot rather than a sequence. If you need repeatable characters across shots, read our guide to consistent characters in AI video before you spend a credit, because identity drift is the fastest way to burn an allowance.

So what: treat the 50 as one shot with two retries, not as a day of production.

Door 2: The Gemini app, which is neither free nor Veo-branded now

This is where the ranking pages fall over. Google has published that Gemini Omni is its latest video generation and editing model and that it will replace Veo in the Gemini app. It is available to users 18 and over holding a Google AI Plus, Pro or Ultra plan, across the languages and markets where the Gemini app operates.

The Gemini Apps help documentation is blunter still: video generation is not available to users under 18, and on a personal account you must have a Google AI plan. There is no free-user path. Pages titled "Veo 3.1 is free for everyone" that point you at the Gemini app are describing a state of the world that no longer holds.

Usage inside the app is metered by compute rather than by clip count. Google says limits factor in prompt complexity, the features used and chat length, that the limit refreshes every 5 hours until you hit your weekly cap, and that you can extend it by purchasing AI credits. That is a very different accounting model from Flow's per-credit ledger, which is why "12 videos a day" style numbers floating around the search results are invented.

So what: if your plan is "use Veo free in the Gemini app", that plan is dead.

Door 3: Google Vids, the Workspace route nobody covers

Vids is a Workspace app, available to Business and Enterprise subscribers. Anyone with a Workspace account can view and collaborate; create-and-copy access is limited to select editions. Veo 3 generation sits behind the "Generate video" icon in the right sidebar of the Vids editor: select Veo, enter your prompt, click Create.

The important caveat is that the access window has an expiry attached. Google extended generative AI features in Vids to Business Starter, Enterprise Starter, Nonprofit, Education Plus and the Teaching and Learning add-on for a limited time, published as running at least through May 31, 2026. That date is now behind us. I could not confirm whether the extension was renewed, quietly ended, or made permanent, so check the Workspace Updates blog before building a team workflow on it.

So what: Workspace access is edition-dependent and time-boxed, which makes it the least stable of the four doors for planning purposes.

Door 4: Gemini API and Vertex AI

The developer surface is the only one that behaves like a normal product: you pay per second of output and there is no daily allowance to run out of. Google's published rate for Gemini Omni Flash is $0.10 per second of video output, the same rate as Veo 3.1 Fast. An eight-second clip therefore lands at roughly $0.80 before retries, and retries are the line item people forget when they budget.

Do not assume that rate is fixed. Google has already repriced Veo on this surface at least once, publishing a dedicated announcement covering new pricing, new configurations and improved resolution for Veo 3 and Veo 3 Fast. Rates on this door move. Run your own maths in the cost calculator and cross-check against the full AI video cost breakdown before you commit to a per-minute quote for a client.

The eligibility gates nobody puts in the intro

Three restrictions block real people and no ranking page lists them together:

  1. Age. Video generation in Gemini Apps is not available to users under 18.
  2. Account type. On a personal account, a paid Google AI plan is required; free users are excluded.
  3. Region. Uploading videos to use for video edits in Gemini Apps is not available in the EEA, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and some US states.

That third one catches producers off guard constantly. You can be a paying Ultra subscriber in London and still be unable to upload footage for an edit. If that describes you, the practical workaround is a different vendor for the edit step; our Runway and Kling comparison covers who accepts uploads where.

Credit allowances, ranked by what you actually get

Four bars of monthly Flow credits: AI Plus at 200, AI Pro at 1,000, Ultra $100 at 10,000 and Ultra $200 at 25,000
Plus barely moves the volume needle; Pro is the first tier where the credit count stops reading like a demo.
PlanFlow credits
No plan50 per day, no rollover
Google AI Plus200 per month
Google AI Pro1,000 per month
Google AI Ultra ($100)10,000 per month
Google AI Ultra ($200)25,000 per month

Note the unit mismatch: the free tier is daily, the paid tiers are monthly. A free user who generates every single day of a month clears more raw credits than AI Plus provides, though those credits are locked to Veo 3.1 Lite, Fast and Quality. Plus buys you plan features and app access more than it buys you Flow volume. If sheer output is the goal, Pro is the first tier where the number stops feeling like a demo.

SynthID: the thing you cannot switch off

Videos created by Veo are watermarked using SynthID, Google's tool for watermarking and identifying AI-generated content, and the resulting file can be checked on Google's SynthID verification platform. The mark is embedded rather than laid over the picture, so it survives normal post work. For commercial delivery this is a contract question, not a technical one. Write the disclosure into your deliverables note and stop worrying about it. If you are weighing vendors partly on watermarking policy, the AI video generator comparison tracks who marks output and how.

Last verified: August 14, 2026

Every number above has moved at least once in the past year. Model names changed. The consumer surface was rebranded. API pricing was republished. A Workspace promotion expired on a date that has already passed. Anyone publishing a "Veo free" page without a verification date is asking you to trust a snapshot of unknown age.

Check these four before you rely on anything here: the Flow credits page at support.google.com/flow/answer/16526234, the Gemini Apps video generation page at support.google.com/gemini/answer/16126339, the API docs at ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/veo, and workspaceupdates.googleblog.com for the Vids entitlement. Five minutes across those four URLs beats any third-party summary, including this one. If you find a discrepancy, the Google page wins and I will update the date at the top.

โ–ธCan I remove the watermark from Veo footage?

No, and you should plan around it. Videos created by Veo are watermarked with SynthID, Google's system for marking AI-generated content. It is embedded in the file rather than drawn on top, so cropping or re-encoding is not a reliable removal path, and anyone can run the file through Google's SynthID verification platform. If a client contract forbids undisclosed AI footage, disclose it before delivery.
